PAIR OF NAKASHIMA CHERRY CAPTAINS CHAIRS
George Nakashima (1905-1990)
unmarked 28.5"h; seat 19"w
Ex. original owner, Eve Charles Costigan, a Chicago attorney, purchased in the 1940-50's.
CRN's correspondence with David Long at the Nakashima Foundation for Peace, New Hope, PA: " The two armchairs and round table look right for early (late '40's, early 50's) Nakashima...If they purchased the pieces directly from the showroom, there would be no order card created and that would explain why there is no record. Also, if they were ordered under someone else's name like an architect/interior designer....We can provide a Disclaimer Letter signed by Mira Nakashima that states that the item looks consistent with George Nakashima's production at that time."
Each has minor chip, one on back of seat, the other on back rail near joint. (See photo)
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500
Realized: $2,000 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
