17TH C. CONNECTICUT LETTER, REV. NOYES TO JUDGE SEWALL
Descended through the family of Noah Doggett (Boston, 1770-1842) to the present.
dated March 12, 1693, written from Stonington, Connecticut
from Rev. James Noyes (b. Newbury, MA 1640-d. Stonington, 1719)
About Point Judith/Sagamore Ninigret (Ninigret the Younger, sachem or chief of Narragansett tribe, d. 1722)
to the
Honorable Samuel Sewal(l) at Boston (1652-1730) Judge, businessman, printer in the Province of Massachusetts Bay. Judge at the Salem witch trials, later to apologize.
Begins by describing his grief and exhaustion "tending to his flock" during an outbreak of "distemper" (probably influenza-the term influenza was not used until the time of the Revolutionary War). Goes on to tell of an arrival of a ship from England. Mentions his
brother (in-law), Joseph Stanton. Rev. Noyes married Dorothy Stanton of Hartford. Finally writes about dealings with the sachem, probably regarding the purchase of land. Connecticut and Rhode Island were having an ongoing border dispute (starting in 1662) regarding forty one miles along the Pawcatuck and Mystic Rivers.
Prov. Brewster Dogget, Maine. See lot 77 for Doggett family history. Also see lots 184, 185 and 186 for additional Doggett ephemera.

Estimate: $400 - $600
Realized: $1,000 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
