Nesbitt was a great friend of Robert Mapplethrope (as well as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Lichtenstein and Motherwell). In 1989 the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C. refused to exhibit sexually explicit Mapplethorpe photographs. Nesbitt then changed his $1.5 million bequest in his will to the Corcoran and left the money to the Phillips Collection instead.
