(2) GLASS TRADE BEAD NECKLACES (CHACHCHALES), GUATEMALA
Guatemala, 1880-1910
coral-like glass beads with attached silver objects including crosses, coins, and various animals, approx 30"
Collector's note: Chachal is a Quiche Maya word for necklace. Such necklaces are typical of Guatemala, dating back to the Conquest. Originally they were made from the coral which the Spanish mined on the West coast of Guatemala. Because the coral was depleted, during the 18th and 19th c., traders replaced the coral beads with coral-like glass trade beads. Silver ornaments were added.

Estimate: $300 - $500
Realized: $200 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
