Born in Minnesota, Karhu lived in Kyoto for fifty years becoming one of the most respected among the elite of contemporary woodblock print makers. It has been said of him that he was more Japanese than the Japanese. His works are on display at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and the Harvard Fogg Museum.
