The original stands in Venice. Colleoni long time served as Captain General for the Republic of Venice. He bequeathed a large portion of his estate to the Republic for the Turkish war with the stipulation that his statue be erected in the Piazza San Marco. Statuary was not permitted there, so the statue was erected before the Scoula San Marco in the Campo Santi Giovanni e Paulo.
