THE STEVENS/KITTREDGE FAMILY NEEDLEWORK PICTURE
embroidered and painted on silk, written in gold script within the eglomise mat:
IMOGEN AND PISANIO /Wrought by Mary Francis 1809/ along with two stanzas from Shakespeare's Cymbeline, Act III. The scene depicts Imogen requesting Pisanio to kill her after being falsely accused of adultery.
total size incl. original gilt frame 25.5" by 31.5"; needlework measures 16.5" by 22.5"; the reverse lined with (fragile) Boston newspaper dated 1873.
From the Stevens/Kittredge family home, Andover, Massachusetts. The Stevens Family was one of the founding families of North Andover, MA. Myra Kittredge (daughter of Joseph Kittredge) born in Hillsborough, NH (1804-1880) married Benjamin Stevens (1790-1848) of Dracut.
Needlework in excellent condition, loss of black paint in glass border. Frame shows age appropriate chips at edges.
