LARGE ITALIAN CANTAGALLI MAIOLICA FOOTED BULBOUS JAR
19th c., Faenza-style, she-wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, the reverse with portrait of Philomena, snake and masque handles, cockerel mark and numbered 9, 16"
During the 19th c. Renaissance-Revival period Ulisse Cantagalli (1839-1901) produced in his factory in Florence authentic copies of Renaissance maiolica using traditional methods of tin glazing earthenware.
This and the entire group of maiolica being sold is from the collection of a Boston, Massachusetts gentleman collected over a period of thirty five years. Interestedly, the gentleman is one of the most highly esteemed blue grass banjo musicians in the United States.
