The Massachusetts consignor and her late husband purchased this at Riet Wiegel Gallery in Leiden, southern Holland 31 years ago.
Appel was a founder of CoBrA association for painters. Primarily known as an expressionist painter, Appel experimented with ceramics and sculpture.
