Exhibited in 1889 at the Metropolitan Opera House, NY at the 'Centennial Celebration of the Inauguration of George Washington as First President of the United States-Loan Exhibition of Historical Portraits and Relics', no. 201, lent by Cape Cod Association, Boston.
Williams was a portrait and miniature painter, a silhouettest, wax-modeler, and engraver in Boston.
George Thatcher, the sitter, was born in Yarmouth, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He began his law practice in York, Maine in 1778. He was a member of the Continental Congress from 1788 to 1789. Subsequently he was elected to the First, Second and Third Congresses. He served as a judge on the supreme court in Maine from 1820 until his death in 1824.
