FRENCH ROSEWOOD AND STRAW MARQUETRY TABLE-TOP CABINET
late 18/early 19th c., the drawers decorated with (19) panels of painted straw art depicting various mythological scenes and multiple figures in landscapes; the large center drawer with small drawer above and below, is flanked by four drawers with double panels to each side; small bracket feet, 20.5"h; 31.5"w; 12"d
In France, small pieces of straw decorated furniture were fashionable from the 1750's on. Straw marquetry in 18th and 19th c. France was predominately done by nuns to raise money for convents, and by prisoners-of-war and other jailed men with time on their hands.
Two drawers have corner crack in glass covering straw panel.
