17TH C. SPANISH COLONIAL CUP-HILT RAPIER
early 17th c., Mexico
double-sided blade has faint initials
I H on both sides, which possibly stands for Juan Hernandez; also marked SARAVAL on one side of blade
engraved and pierced cup hilt, straight quillon, wire bound grip (
wire poss. replaced) and pommel finial, overall 44.75"; length of blade to cup 37.25"
Found in New Mexico in 1940, and once displayed in a now defunct private NM museum.
Note:
Saraval is a Sephardic Jewish name. There was a Saravel family which migrated to the New World around 1600 to escape the Spanish Inquisition.
Old nicks to blade edge appropriate to age. Two screws at base of cup hilt replaced at time of restoration for museum exhibit in1940.
