LARGE SPANISH COLONIAL CROSS-FORM STIRRUP (ESTRIBOS DE CRUZ)
c. 1750, Mexico, 19.5"h; 14"w (at widest)
Intricately wrought iron stirrups like this, used for show or parade, reflected the wealth and status of the horseman who rode with them. Such stirrups were banned in 1772 by Royal Decree for religious reasons since they were often adorned with religious images, and also, in consideration of pain inflicted on the horses. Often referred to as "conquistador stirrups", many were destroyed at that time.
