school of FONTAINBLEU, 17th c.
nude lady at her toilette (Diane de Poitiers)
o/c, (old reline), 21.25 by 17 in., original frame
From the home of a Washington DC gentleman.
Diane de Poitiers was a noblewoman at the court of Francis I of France, and the favorite of his son, King Henry II. Twenty years older than the king, she was famous for retaining her youthful looks and vigor. A common anti-aging remedy of the times was an elixir consisting of gold. In 2015 scientists conducted tests on her exhumed hair and bones, and learned that she was slowly killed by her daily drinking of that elixir.
Black lights fine.
