Among Hoffman's genres, were paintings of underwater scenes painted after looking through a glass-bottom bucket to see the fish and coral reefs in the tropics.
Due to his keen observations of the underseas world, Hoffman was invited to accompany scientists on their expeditions to the Galapagos Islands in 1923 and later to Bermuda. He would paint hundreds of underwater scenes, several of which were then translated into weavings by his wife Beatrice. He was awarded the Gold Medal Award from the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915.
