The Austrian Hapsburg eagle appeared on Spanish and Spanish Colonial objects as a result of the branch that ruled Spain from 1516 to 1700.
The Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian was installed by Napoleon III in 1864 as emperor of Mexico. After the French withdrew from Mexico, and under pressure from the United States, per the orders of the president of the Mexican Republic, Maximilian was executed in Juarez in 1867.
