An email to the consignor from the Maritime Museum, Bath, Maine states: "...The fact that the painting is black and white, indicates to me that it was done for a newspaper or magazine illustration....It is possible..that he saw the Boston boat at some point in his life, though not at all certain that he saw any of the Moosehead Lake boats. So if the painting is by Sanborn, it has more historical value being of the saltwater steamer, than the freshwater boat. Finding the published version of this illustration would help date the painting, and possible confirm the identity of the artist."
Estimate: $400 - $600
Realized: $350 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
