ALBERT ERNEST BACKUS (American, 1906-1990)
brilliant blooming Royal Poinciana tree
sgn. l.r.
A E Backus, o/c, 25 by 30 in., framed
The parents of the consignor owned a Massachusetts nursing home in the 1980's. This painting was given to them by the family of a deceased resident.
Backus taught Alfred Hair, a member of the group of African-American painters known as the Florida Highwaymen. Backus gave the group permission to copy his works, but asked that they sell them in locations distant from where he lived so that his clients would not be upset seeing copies. Packing their paintings in their cars, selling door to door or along the highway, they traveled as far north as Georgia. Hence the tag Highwaymen.

Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000
Realized: $36,000 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
