the Discovery of the Body of Holofernes,
ink and red chalk on paper (laid down on board), 19 by 29 in. (sight), matted, framed, under glass
From a Massachusetts North Shore collection.
Prov: The Estate of David Weil, Chicago and Oslo, Norway, Harvard 1933, d.1992.
In 1704, toward the end of his life, and after his return from his stay in Spain as Court Painter to Charles II, Giordano was commissioned to decorate the ceiling of the sacristy of the Monastery of St. Martin in Naples on these themes. What are presumed to be the oil studies for this project are in The St. Louis Art Museum (purchased in 1965). These drawings appear to be the original studies for those paintings and, thus, the "first draft", as it were, for the Naples frescoes.

Vertical center crease; minor staining; minor rough edges (only bottom edge visible).
Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500
Realized: $950 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
