JAPANESE SAMURAI HELMET (KABUTO) AND MASK
24-plate iron bowl with rows of rivets decreasing in size up to the gilt tehen kanamono; the peak attached by gilded copper rivets is covered with pattered skin (same); the neckguard (jikoro) consists of three black lacquer plates laced with blue thread and decorated with thread cross knots, the fukigaeshi (upturned ears) maintain gilt copper mons; along with a matching face mask (ressei men) of black lacquer with mustache, red lacquer inside, the black lacquer throat guard (yodare kake) consists of three plates decorated with cross knots
From the collection of the late David Abbate of New York and New Jersey.
The object held in the gilt stalk at front is missing; wear spots to peak; small flakes of lacquer missing here and there; orange chords show wear.
