(3) JAPANESE HAND-DYED SILK KIMONO
early 20th c., stencil dyed with applied gold leaf
Exhibited in 1982 at Bonwit Teller's, Boston
"The stylized, asymmetric floral and bird design suggest the passage of seasons and the significance of nature. Worn on important, but not extremely formal, social occasions." (exhibition label); along with two kimono with maple leaf decoration
which were included in a Japanese Fall Festival Exhibit in September 1992
Estate of Carol Ishimoto, Cambridge, MA
These three kimono were ever so neatly and correctly folded by Ms. Ishimoto and stored a box until now. One belonged to her sister, Mary.
In the 1940's, as the war with Japan escalated, Carol Ishimoto, her sister Mary, and family fell victim to Executive Order 9066. Their family property was confiscated and the family was interred at the camp at Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Because of the sponsorship of Edgar and Katherine Seeler of Cambridge, the sisters were among the first to leave the camp and the sisters became a vital part of the Seeler's extended family. A librarian at Harvard University, Carol lived in Cambridge for 70 years, being caregiver, confidant and eventual heir to the Seeler estate (sold by CRN Auctions in 11/2011).

Estimate: $800 - $1,200
