IMPORTANT FRENCH GOTHIC LIMESTONE CARVING
c. 1300, Madonna and Child, 30"
This figure was given as a gift to the nuns at Little Sisters of the Poor, Kansas City, by a former WWII soldier, late in his life. He discovered it after a bomb blast and sent it to America. A related 12th c. limestone relief of an angel, can be found in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City. Both objects are believed to be from the ruined Abbey of Saint-Evre (or surrounding complex) in Toul, Lorraine, France. Two closely related figures are in the Victorian and Albert Museum, London dated 1300-1350.
Ex the private collection of a Connecticut gentleman and his wife who resided for ten years in Latin America beginning in 1962.
Weathered surface; lily bloom missing; heads re-attached; shrapnel scars.
