British Captain Robert Scott (1868-1912) leading a party of five reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912 only to learn that Norwegian Roald Amundsen and his party were the first men to arrive at the Pole in December 1911. Scott and his companions on their return trip died from starvation and extreme cold 150 miles from their base camp, 11 miles to the next depot.
