BWA BUTTERFLY PLANK MASK, BOUGOU DINDE
Mali, each wing with three graduated circles, pair of circle eyes, checkerboard reverse, 94"w; 13"h
Used by the Do society at dances to promote crop fertility, and also used at funerals. Checkerboard pattern symbolized the separation of light from dark, good from evil, female from male. The geometric designs convey coded information to the initiates, and meaning vary by clan and level of initiation.
