Chinese of the Han period believed that ancestors lived on in the afterlife and needed miniature clay replicas of everyday objects, called "spirit goods" (mingqi). Hill jars are replicas of wine-warming vessels. The lids were made in a press-mold and finished on a pottery wheel.
