EARTHENWARE WATCHTOWER MODEL
Eastern Han dynasty, green lead glaze, in four stacking parts, total height 29"; base 10"square
Prov.: The David Abbate (1949-2013) Collection
David Abbate acquired his collection of Han dynasty earthenware and metal tomb objects in the 1980's, primarily through a Japanese antiquities dealer with whom he was acquainted.
Molds aided tremendously in the manufacture of identical vessels, but the most important innovation in the Han period was the development of lead glazing. These low-fired glazes were colored with copper to produce green, iron to create yellow or brown. The toxicity of lead meant that these new glazes were best suited to mortuary pottery rather than daily use.
This imposing model indicates the high status of the person buried in the tomb. Stylistically, the date and northern Chinese provenance of this model is confirmed by archaeologically excavated pieces, most notably a green-glazed model of a four-story tower, discovered in an Eastern Han tomb in Gaotang, eastern Shandong Province.
Elements missing here and there.
