JOHN EDWARD BOREIN (American, 1872-1945)
Arizona cow punchers
sgn. in margin l.r.
Edward Borein, etching, impression 4.75 by 8.75 in., matted, framed under glass; gallery label: FREDERICK KEPPEL & CO...Rare engravings and Etchings...39th St., New York
From the estate of a Dover, Massachusetts gentleman.
Born in California, Borein, is considered, along with Charles Russell and Fedreric Remington, the most authentic of early cowboy artists. A self-taught artist, Borein was the only of these who made etchings. In 1907 he moved to New York working as an illustrator, but was not appreciated there. In 1921, he moved back full-time to California living there until his death in 1945(Santa Barbara). It was during that period he made most of his Western scene etchings, just over a hundred of them.
