Lantz, a sculptor and medalist, was born in New Rocelle, NY. He attended the National Academy of Design and the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design. In 1938, while working as an instructor for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), he won, besting 247 applicants, a competition to create two statues for the Federal Trade Commission Building in Washington, D.C. The models he submitted for the competition are now in the collections of the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
