Collector's note:
BAS-RELIEF OF THE MADONNA AND CHILD, Unknown Sicilian Scultptor, circa 1600. Made of cartapesta, gesso and linen, modeled on cypress? wood. The relief, which is similar to, and probably based upon fifteenth century central Italian reliefs, but is polichromed and gilded in the Spanish fashion. The combination of which would indicate origin in Spanish-dominated southern Italy in general, and Sicily in particular. An actual Spanish origin, being highly unlikely, as both the format of the relief and especially the technique and medium were rarely used in Spain during this period. David Abbate Nov. 1980.
