one armchair and five sidechairs carved in the Gothic manner

See: 'The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide' by George Smith, Jones and Co., London 1828. An engraving of this chair is shown titled 'Drawing Room and Dining Room Gothic Chairs, Plate CXLIII'.
Smith states: "In this plate are two designs for chairs, after the style of the florid Gothic...Gothic furniture should never be introduced but where the architectural style of the building is after the same taste;- In all other instances its adoption becomes an anomaly."
Nabu Press in 2012 reproduced this book in paperback. An online digital image of the engraving appears on the website of the New York Public Library's Art and Architecture Collection located in the Stephen Schwarzman Building's research library, catalog call #MOI.
