By descent from a New Jersey private collector.
It was this battle which inspired Francis Scott Key to write the poem "The Star-Spangled Banner". British warships bombarded the fort for 25 hours from a range of 2 miles. The British could not enter the harbor due to a chain of 22 sunken ships and the American cannons. Eventually the British, low on ammunition, retreated with only one ship receiving a direct hit.
