Germantown. An American four-ply, machine-spun yarn, Germantown was named for its original place of manufacture in Pennsylvania. The Navajos began to use this yarn in the late 1870's and employed it extensively for the next thirty years. Germantown yarns were available in a wide range of colors that were previously inaccessible. To use many of them together was frequently an irresistible temptation.
