Grid lines visible, probably study for a mural.
Gammell, born in Providence, RI, attended the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts where he studied with Edmund Tarbell and William Paxton. Feeling out of step with current trends of the art world, in 1939, the year this painting is dated, he suffered a nervous breakdown. This work is a psychologically intriguing depiction of conflict and struggle.
Original liner at top which the artist painted incorporating it into the whole work.
Estimate: $5,000 - $7,000
Realized: $6,500 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
