Lilla Cabot Perry was born in Boston to an elite Brahmin family. In 1898-1910 she and her family lived in Japan, her husband having acquired a teaching position. Her work was shown in a one-woman exhibit in Tokyo, and she became an honorary member of the Nippon Bijutsu-In Art Association. Earlier, from 1889-1909, she spent nine summers painting in Giverny, France and developed a close friendship with Claude Monet. Her first solo exhibition was at the St. Botolph Club in Boston in 1897.
