CHINESE PICTURE JASPER SNUFF BOTTLE (BIYANHU)
late 19th c., polished, yellow with red veining, 3"
In the 16th cen. tobacco was introduced to the court at Beijing and smoked in pipes. During the subsequent Qing Dynasty, Smoking tobacco was illegal, but the use of powdered tobacco, or snuff, often mixed with herbs, was allowed since the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for colds, headaches and stomach disorders. By the end of the 17th cen., lasting for most of the 18th c., using snuff had become part of social ritual, and snuff bottles as objects of beauty, came to represent status. The use of snuff declined in the 1920's, at the time of the Republic.
All snuff bottles being sold appear to have no chips or cracks, and are in fine condition unless noted. Stoppers for the most part are replacements.
Estimate: $400 - $600
Realized: $225 - Excluding Buyer's Premium
