Smith is first listed in the Boston city directory in 1829. In 1839 he moved his shop to Cornhill. As his trade expanded, he eventually came to specialize in 'bank and counting room furniture'. In 1865 the business directory lists him as a furniture dealer, rather than a manufacturer. The firm remained in business until at least 1877.
