19th c., two-part, carved white marble, one the head and shoulders of a grotesque satyr, the other a maiden adorned with grapes, both on rectangular tapering pillars, 75"h; square base 11.5" by 10"
From the garden of a Cambridge, MA home.
A herm is a stone sculpture serving as a boundary marker. The word is associated with the Greek god Hermes, associated with boundaries and fertility.
Shows some weather wear, green mildew and spotting from being outdoors. Satyr has crack to shoulder; woman with repair to neck, small piece of vine missing.
