ITALIAN GOLD-LEAFED AND PAINTED WOOD BOOK COVER
tempera on wood, the front cover with figure of saint in Renaissance dress with sword, the back with lion coat of arms above six coats of arms surrounding an inscription, each cover with gilt grape and floral on black ground border, and each corner mounted with embossed brass floret, each cover measures 15" by 11.25" is joined by old leather spine.
Literal translation from Italian:
Inventory of the articles in the sacristy of the Domo of Siena, made again the second time during the time of the venerable man Checco Dimignanello, and of the other furniture. In the calendar time of July 1 to January 1 in the year of our Lord 1456.
Front panel has vertical split, some paint loss, iron lock on front cover missing.
