Gattorno was one of the founders of the Cuba's Modernish Movement. Ernest
Hemingway sponsored Gattorno's first solo exhibition in the US at the Passedoit Gallery in NYC. This led to a commission from the Bacardi Co. to paint a mural on the 35th floor of the Empire State Building. He and his wife lived in Greenwich Village for more than 30 years.
