At that time Egypt was a semi-autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire. In 1805 Ali was appointed Pasha and Viceroy by the Ottoman sultan, and remained in office until 1848. He restructured Egypt putting an end to traditional society, primarily for his own advancement, yet cleared the path for the creation of an independent Egyptian state. He had 95 children.
