Born in White Plains, NY, Ward's work as a professional illustrator appeared in the
Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Red Book. Studying at the Art Student League 1910-12, he shared a studio with Norman Rockwell. Part of the WPA project, he created a mural for the White Plains Federal Building, and was the artist for the U.S. postage stamp commemorating the Battle of White Plains.
