A religious and political reformer, calling the Roman church 'a false, proud archaic wench' The term "Bonfires of the vanities" comes from this time, when after the reign of Lorenzo Medici, a Republic was established by Savonarola in Florence and his strict moral code was adopted. Items of moral laxity, including mirrors, musical instruments, pagan books, jewelry, 'lewd' paintings (inc. works by Botticelli) were collected and thrown into a bonfire in the Piaza della Signoria in 1497. He was excommunicated in May of 1497, after which he attended to sick monks during the plague. Further conflicts with the church led to his torture, hanging and burning in 1498 in Florence.
