El Senor de los Temblores (The Saint of the earthquakes)
The garments with decorative gilding in the Cuzco manner.
Christ is considered the Patron Saint of Cuzco, Peru. Cuzco suffered a devastating earthquake in 1650. Christ on the cross is represented as an indigenous native, his parents are represented as European.
unsigned, o/c, 54 by 47 in. (approx.), original gilt frame. From the home of a woman who lived in Peru for 10 years.
Cuzco (Qusqu) was the capital of the Ancient Inca Empire. The Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro captured it in 1533. The Spaniards murdered the last Inca ruler, Tupac Amau in 1572, destroyed the city, and built a Spanish city over the old foundations, colonizing and exploiting the native population through relentless force; however, beyond enslavement, the greatest cause of the demise of the native population were Old World diseases, particularly smallpox. Natives were forcefully converted to Christianity, and it took only one generation after colonization for the entire continent to be under Christian influence. Cuzco Cathedral was built on ancient ruins.
