Harry Roseland, born in Brooklyn, New York, remained there throughout his career. Unlike many of his contemporaries, he did not travel to Europe. He was largely self taught as an artist but did some study with J.B. Whittaker in Brooklyn. At a time when abstract art was becoming popular, Roseland chose to paint in a realist style painting early in his career landscapes and still-lifes. He later realized that his true passion was painting works that told a story.
