Henry Clay (1777-1852) The Great Compromiser, b. Virginia. Senator, also elected 4 times as Speaker of the House of Representatives, He was an eloquent "war hawk" and was most influential in bringing on the War of 1812 with Britain. Unsuccessfully ran for president in 1824, 1832, 1844. Clay was famous for the Missouri Compromise of 1850.
