LARGE 19TH C. GILT BRONZE 'WARWICK' URN
old patina, encircled with 8 relief heads of the gods, with twisted reeded handles, on fluted pedestal base, 12"h; 14" diameter
The original ancient Roman pottery urn which dates back to c. 200 C.E. was discovered in 1770 at Hadrian's Villa, Tivoli, Italy and purchased by Sir Wm. Hamilton, British envoy to Naples. After restoring the urn, it was sold in 1774 to the Earl of Warwick, married to Hamilton's sister, who built a conservatory at Warwick Castle to house the urn. A replica of it now resides in the Warwick Conservatory, and the original is the the Burrell Collection in Glasgow.
