Pyle was a member of the Salmagundi Club, 1876; Associate National Academy, 1905; and the National Academy, 1907. He studied in Philadelphia with Francis Van der Weilen from 1869 to 1872. From 1898 to 1902 Pyle taught his proteges at his studio in Chadds Ford, PA, and became known as the founder of the 'Brandywine School'. His students included N.C. Wyeth, Maxfield Parrish, V. Oakely and H. Dunn. He is often referred to as the 'Father of American Illustration".
