INDO-PORTUGUESE CARVED EBONY OPEN ARMCHAIR
Coromandel Coast, India, 1680-1700

This type of chair originated in Batavia (now N. Jakarta, India) under Dutch influence. By late 17th c. it was also being produced in Sri Lanka and the Coromandel coast. A similar chair sold Sotheby's London, The Indian Sale, 5/8/1997, lot 174.
