Essie Lucas was born in Vermont and studied under Scott Leighton (1849-1898), the most noted painter of animals in the East. She became famous in her lifetime especially for her paintings of horses. Later, married and living in Kentucky, she painted a portrait of the famous thoroughbred 'Man O' War'.
